It would be very similar to assigning different classifications for diseases. Although some are similar, their subtle differences give them distinction because they behave a little bit differently. Pluto has a unique orbit compared to the other planets so a new classification was given for those types of planets.

If they had accepted pluto they would have had to accept all of the other objects in the Kuplier Belt.

Except those objects are probably missing something that pluto has.

Yes, they probably don't even rotate around the sun, but some people think pluto doesn't either.

It's orbit crosses Neptune's i think but it still orbits the sun. That was one of the reason why it got it's new classification.
