I read this book when it came out, a few years ago, and my previous readings of fantasy epics such as the Lord of the Rings completely ruined it for me. Why? Because Eragon was the Lord of the Rings. I held that belief and still do even though that new movie is coming out. Every time I see a comercial for it, I just see LOTR all over it! That is why I have no interest for it, and I'll cite some similarities.
An ordinary being discovers a fantastically magical and powerful object that belongs to an evil empire. Said being then uses object unskillfully, and then has companions to use said object against the empire(destroying the ring would be using it against Sauron) while many agents are used to get it back by the empire, and there are wars and all that stuff and elves who are mystically powerful and perfect in all things.
If anyone sees it, prove me wrong, go ahead, but you cant convince me.

I agree that it seems to be an LOTR ripoff. It's way too similar. I haven't seen it and I don't want to see it.

Yes, I too noticed how very similar it is to LOTRs. Also, is it just me, or do the dragons in that movie look way to much like horses?

Horses? I can't imagine what could be done to a dragon to make it look like a horse. I don't know the Eragon story, so I don't know any similarites to LOTR, so I guess I'll have to take your word on it, TMP. At least its not a 2D cartoon like DragonLance is going to be. . . It doesn't look very good to me, British kid gets dragon, over-used dramatic whispering and yelling, that's all you get from the trailor. It doesn't look like a breakthrough in fantasy movies. Sorry, try again.

I would like to see it anyway, and since I have the books I should make room in my list for them sometime. Are they really that similar? But you have a point Ras, it does look a little questionable. Should they ever come out with a Dragon Lance or a Legend of Drizzt movie, then you would get original fantasy you desire, though I'm hoping that they don't make one on the Legend of Drizzt.

This brings up a common debate. For the DragonLance movie, it appears that some people are just glad to have a movie at all, no matter how good or bad it is. My view on the DragonLance movie is if they don't do it well, its worse than if they had never tried in the first place, and they're headed in a questionable direction. Of course, I must reserve final judgement until I actually see it. There's not supposed to be any new news on the movie until January or February, so I'm still stuck with the same information. I haven't seen either of the movies I'm about to mention, but doesn't the trailer for Eragon bear some resemblance to The Chronicles of Narnia?

I've thought about that myself, and I would agree. The appearance is more akin to The Chronicles Of Narnia. I wonder how popular it will be if it is similar in style of TCN and if it is as you say very similar to LOTR.

Probably not very popular at all...

I wouldn't be surprised. The movie doesn't look that great.

No, it doesn't. To me, it looks like a cliche combination of Reign Of Fire, LOTR and (maybe) Chronicles of Narnia. I doubt it will do very well, though there will always be diehard fans who go to see it four times and THEN criticize it. All in all, I doubt I'll be seeing it. If I want the story, I'll read the books, the movies rarely (If ever) do justice.

Movies are usually worse than books. The only exceptions are the movies that had books written based off of them. Such as Star Wars.

Yes, I agree, the Lord of the Rings movies severly raped many of the ideas of the movies, the 3rd one left out two very important plot devices.

Yeah, the books were WAY better than the movies in that case.

Make that three, in the third alone.
1. Gandalf defeating Saruman in a duel 2. Some guy( i cant remember his name, the speaker of sauron) coming to speak with Gandalf and co. before the battle at the black gate began. 3. THe hobbits returning to find the shire taken over by evil forces led by Wormtongue.
