It's no wonder the UN decided not to be involved, because who is to say that a country should be condemned for having weapons? The UN didn't see that as a good reason to start a war, and the US should have realized that as well, unless of course there were ulterior motives for the war. There might have actually been a justifiable reason for the war.

Such as what? As it was, the reason for the war was most likely: A) Oil B) A foothold in the Middle East, as GS suggested

If there is an ulterior motive, then I would suspect that it is hidden, but if so I couldn't imagine why. Bush would only benifit from revealing a more noble cause. You are probably right, I personally doubt there was any noble motive but nothing is certain.

I doubt the war would be over oil. If the MidEast stops shipping oil to the West, then the West will turn to Canada, which I hear has enough oil to rival Saudi Arabia.
With that said, I doubt that we will depend on oil for very long. The past generation has been trying to get this generation to not rely on fossil fuels as much, and to get creative when it comes to alternate fuel sources. we could easily not be using oil in the next 15 years.

It goes a bit deeper than that. politcal officers are on office because they were supported by oil companies in return that the officers pass legislatures to keep the business alive. It is a very stubborn and old practice that would need to break before the end of oil dependency.

I know what goes on in the corrupt political system. Now, it would be quite easy to break that system should a dictator in an oil-less country decides to break those ties.

But using more legal methods will be exceedingly difficult. How can you replace the corrupted parts of the government if the whole system itself is corrupted? Those ties will likely last as long as the oil supply. When that happens, I hope the oil companies crash and burn painfully for being so short sighted.

They better. And then I hope 5 Hurricane Katrinas come upon all of them.
