Overview: This effect I made on my own, No help, no inspiration. Its the result of random experments. Here it is, its fairly tough. But I'll make it easy.
Requirements: Photoshop 6 or higher. Your going to use shapes. Sorry PS 5.
Difficulty: 8.5 / 10
Step 1 : Alright, open a new image. Make it RBG color, and have a black background. Make sure its square. ( I used 500x500 )
Step 2 : Pick the Custom Shape tool, and draw a Boom1 shape from one cornet to the other. As illustrated.
Step 3 : Take out your pen tool, and right click inside the shape. Go: Make Selection. Make that 0 into a 1, and click ok.
Step 4 : Now, with the selection still highlighted, make a new layer. And on this new layer, Go Edit->Fill. Fill it white.
Step 5 : Delete the old shape layer. Now, you should only have the standard layer, with the white shape, and the black background.
Step 6 : Center it as best you can. You should have something like this.
Step 7 : Now, lets get this thing on. Filter->Blur->radial Blur. Set the settings as follows.
Step 8 : Re-apply this filter 2-4 times. ( Ctrl+f )
Step 9 : Rename the layer, call it Explode. And apply a layer mask.
Step 10 : Take out your Gradient Tool, and set it as follows.
Step 11 : Now, in the center of the boom, drag the gradient out a bit, not to much, just far enough so its a little bit aways from the inner spikes.
Step 12 : Duplicate the layer. And Filter:->Distort->Twirl. Set the settings as follows. Now, set the layer blending mode to "Overlay"
Step 13 : Now, duplicate Explode again. And put it inbetween the twirled layer, and the original. This time, Twirl it, the other direction. Set its mode to overlay as well. Then, merge all three layers. Leave the background.
Step 14 : You'll get something like this.
Step 15 : Now, go Image->Mode->Grayscale. Select Merge, or flatten. Whatever.
Step 16 : Now, go Image->Mode->Index Color. select ok.
Step 17 : Now go, Image->Mode->Color Table. Select BLACK BODY. Hit ok.
Step 18 : Now, Invert. Ctrl+I. And Go Filter->Blur->Radial Blur. Now, use the same settings above, but, move that little grid thing so its about the same place as the hole on the image.
Repeat this filter 2-5 times. Its up to you. I did it 2 times
Once, finished, Invert it back. And your done!
FINISHED!!!
After radial blurring it, you'll get your effect.
Heres mine.
