Overview:If you’ve tried this program before, you already know that Garage Band contains multiple clips of tunes and beats. As impressive they may sound, there is little you can do with them. All you can really do is just change the pitch of the clip, shorten or lengthen it and place them wherever you want. This is a very easy way to make some music. Many advertisements use this program and I find that the way most of them use it is rather sloppy, uncreative and made clearly by an amateur. Some advertisements do just add in clips yet it remains effective, but in the most cases I’ve seen, they are not. If you are at a stage where you mostly rely on repetitive clips to make your music in Garage Band like most advertisements, then this will help you reach the next stage and be more creative with your work.
Requirements:
Garage Band
Difficulty: 7 / 10
Step 1 : Name your tune, set your time, set your speed and set your key. You can change any of these later on if you decide to do so. I would recommend that you keep it in 4/4 time since most if not all tracks work for it. Note that different keys contain different tracks. (E contains more rock guitar clips than C for example
Step 2 : As usual you start with your keyboard and grand piano track. Get rid of both them.
Step 3 : Next we will use a clip from the beat section. Its one of those blue repetitive clips but for beats you have little choice, besides they sound great.
Step 4 : You will now require a green clip. They are scattered everywhere so I get most of mine in the electric section.
Step 5 : Click on the green track and then go to track editor. You can move the notes around, expand and contract them, and edit their accents and volume. WARNING: I have encountered a problem when making eighth notes from larger notes: When you compress a note into its smallest form, they don’t register. (That note cannot be heard) If you want eighth notes then they have to start out as eighth notes.
Step 6 : As you can see I’ve completely changed the order of the notes. The beat and the pattern are different. The new formations and patterns of the notes is the key to making a creative tune. This is the main skill that is required to make your own music. From this point on I will offer some more tips and tricks to enhance your skills and produce better music.
Step 7 : For this method you will need to get your keyboard back.
Step 8 : You should move your playback bar to an area where there are no other clips playing to prevent anything from going wrong. To make notes with the keyboard, press the record button first. Don’t worry about rushing to get back to the keyboard, you can cut off any empty space later. Press the buttons on the keyboard to get your notes. The length of the notes depends on how long you hold down the buttons on the keyboard. Don’t worry about getting the right notes because it’s nearly impossible to get your tune like that. Just concentrate on the beats and fix the pitches of the notes later. This is an effective method for getting those pesky eighth notes.
Step 9 : Here I have made a long note (I Don’t know exactly how long it is) and 3 eighth notes. From here you can bring them up or down to change their pitch.
Step 10 : Remember my warning? If you made that long note into and eighth note it won’t register. (The first note you see use to be the long note) That always happened for me but you should try it and see if your Garage Band reacts the same way.
Step 11 : You’ve probably had the problem where you can’t get a certain note to fit just right. They may be off beat or don’t sound exactly as you imagined. A simple solution would be to just take that check mark off of the snap to grid option.
Step 12 : This is how you can access your instrument and key control. To change what your instrument is or sounds like, go to the Software Instrument list. Your selected green track will change into the instrument you chose and will generate a different sound. You should spend your time experimenting here. Many instruments can only be found here.
Step 13 : The other area (the master track area, is where you can change the general pitch of your tune and your time.
Step 14 : If you look in the guitar section, (When in the key of C) then you should only see 3 Edgy Rock Guitar clips there.
Step 15 : If you change your key to E flat for example, will end up with 10 Edgy Rock Guitar clips. If you check them out, you will see that the first several ones there do not exist in the C .
Step 16 : If you like that Guitar in the E flat key but you want to play it in C, then all you have to do is drag that clip onto your main screen and reset the master track back to C.
Step 17 : When you make the transition from E flat to C again you will still have that clip from E flat on your main screen, but your selection will be limited to 3 Edgy Rock Guitars again.
