Well, in the movies, Hanso made Dharma's dream come to life, As quoted " Alvar Hanso, made our dream, a reality" so they probably knew. Maybe each station is a certain research topic?

Thought it does seem that every hatch serves a different purpose and we know that the Staff was the medical hatch. If Hanso did know about their work, why would they cancel if Dharma was producing some very promising results. Perhaps an incident forced Hanso to see folly in joining with Dharma.

I don't think it's American, military or otherwise. We hae seen that Korea is highly involved, so if any military action is there, then it could be korean.
