OK so here it goes.
My theory is that the monster that everyone is so afraid of is a manifestation of their fears and emotions. Think about it. How could a cloud of particles show parts of Eko's past? One of the main things from the Lord of the Flies inspired me on this. Everyone thinks there is a beast in the jungle. But the problem is, it doesnt exist. The savage kids think it does and take precautions against it, but the kids who still are civilized know it doesnt exist.
Each person on the island sees the smoke monster differently. Notice how it seems that everytime the smoke monster appears, flashbacks are enacted? And all of these flashbacks are of their fears. Jack's dad is his representation, the horse is Kate's, Dave is Hurley's, the boar is Sawyer's. In the 23rd Psalm, Eko saw the smoke, and pieces of his past were flashing back at him. He was able to face his fears. If we see that episode from Charlie's view, we will see something else, something that he fears. The dreams everyone has are part of its effects. Locke and Eko could face their fears, and that is why they could look into the eye of the island.

That might accually be the Cerberus system itself. The system takes the form of their fears! Good theory.

See what kinda disproves this theory is that the tailies didnt see/hear the monster. Maybe Goodwin was the represenation of their fears?
THink about this. The night of the crash, the monster is mechanical. They had just been in a crash. THey were still traumatic about the crash occuring. The crash would have made a similar noise as the monster made, would it not?

Maybe it is a buildup of thier fears. But I would like it better if the Cerberus used thier fears to scare them more, thus it would be real, and feeding off of thier fears.

Maybe the S.M. (smoke monster) represents their fears while there is still a real monster.
