They had a purpose with the bears other than testing reactions. Their experiments were in genetic modification or something related to it. There is some purpose to their being there, most likely. Testing their reactions wouldn't really gain the Others anything. If Ben does in fact have the tumor, he might simply have Sawyer and Kate there to give Jack a reason to cooperate.

That sounds reasonable. Perhaps Ben realizes that Jack might to try to kill him, so he might threaten Jack by saying that if he dies, the others will kill Kate an Sawyer.

That's basically what I said, yes. That is one possible scenario, but this assumes that Ben actually has the tumor, which may or may not be true. If he doesn't, then he might yet have an alternate purpose for Kate and Sawyer.

And so far their only use has been manual labor. I would expect someone of Ben's complexity to have a better use for them then that.

. . . Go figure. Any ideas what Sawyer and Kate's work is FOR? I don't recall it being mentioned where the broken rocks were going to.

I don't think it was told as to where they were going, but Kate did say it was for something big. Material for weapons or other manufactured products perhaps?

Alright, now that there has been a new episode, let us continue. First of all, does anyone know of any medical reason why Ben would simply wake up, even though he was under anesthesia? Of course strange things happen on Lost, but to simply wake up at that point was a very interesting twist.
On another note, based on Juliet's words at the end of the episode to Jack, that Ben will finally let her go, or something to that effect, it can be guessed therefore that Juliet and perhaps others are being kept on the island against their will, persuaded perhaps like Juliet was to join that research corporation (Which looks to me like a pre-Dharma Initiative group, or the Dharma Initiative covering their true intentions while they gather recruits, going under a different name), and of course Ethan was observed there, (possibly) testifying to that theory.

I found it interesting that Juliet decided to take action to spare Ben's life. She could have left at will if he was dead, and Ben was likely not very charismatic with the others, and seeing him dead would have benefits, so why try to save him? I suspected that she would try something like that but I can't yet imagine why.
